Bridge Week: A great way to acclimate to college
Bridge Week is a freshmen program at IUPUI that has been around since its introduction in 2001 with 19 students. This year, 1,100 students participated in 49 different sections offered by the program. The number of students involved in the program has generally increased by 200-300 students each year since its creation. Bridge allows freshmen to adjust to campus life before school actually begins.

Anthony Patterson II Overcomes Extreme Adversity
IUPUI student Anthony Patterson II was born into a life of drug addiction, abuse, and gang activity. He was taught that attending college was "far-fetched" and that criminal behavior was the norm. Despite adversity and an utter lack of support, Patterson was able to transcend the odds stacked against him to become an Ivy Tech graduate and a current student at IUPUI. He took on the role of student facilitator for this year's incoming IUPUI freshmen and works as an instructional assistant at Pike High School.

Transformative Education: Changing the Game
Emmanuel Ricks is a Bowen scholar from Indianapolis who joined the program prior to receiving an associate’s degree in business administration at Ivy Tech. Ricks has since transferred to IUPUI to obtain a bachelor’s degree in marketing and international studies, an ambitious double-major pursuit driven by his entrepreneurial mindset. IUPUI’s Bowen Scholars is one of three scholarships at IUPUI funded by the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust and overseen by Charlie Johnson.
Transformative Education: Altering Reality
Trinaty Hobson is from a small town in Jennings County, Indiana. Though going to college was “not encouraged or pressed” by her parents, who did not finish high school, Hobson always knew she wanted to go. Choosing to attend IUPUI, with its dynamic urban campus that differed greatly from her quiet hometown, was not originally a part of Hobson’s plan.
Student Commencement Speaker Discusses Her Path to Graduation
Recent IUPUI graduate Amber Kriech has long had a passion for public speaking, a characteristic that led to her most recent endeavor: delivering a commencement address to over 4,000 of her fellow Jaguars. Though most students would likely have found the idea of being onstage in front of that many people daunting, for Kriech it felt like a fitting end to her undergraduate career. “I had some butterflies on my way up there, but once I was there facing everyone, it just felt right,” she says of the experience.
Catching Up with a Recent IUPUI Grad
Grace Perkowitz is an IUPUI alumna who graduated with a bachelor of science in electrical engineering, a field of study chosen to honor an important person in her life and to match her personal interests. Her grandfather was an electrical engineer, and her mother often said Perkowitz had an "engineer's mind," which she inherited from him. Perkowitz was recruited to play for the women's soccer team in 2012. Though that scholarship originally attracted her to the university, the resources and sense of community at IUPUI are what made her sure of her decision.

Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust Awards Grant for Fostering Success Program at IUPUI
Indianapolis, IN (January 2017) - The Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust has awarded a grant to establish the Fostering Success Program at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. The program will support the success of IUPUI students who have experienced foster care, homelessness, or who have been wards of the court. The first students in the program will begin in the fall of 2017, with a goal of adding a new cohort of 40 students each year. Partners from youth-serving organizations such as Indiana Connected by 25, the Indiana Department of Child Services, and the Children’s Bureau will assist the program in identifying eligible students.

Taylor’s name was then submitted to the Midwest Association of Student Employment Administrators (MASEA), and he also won the Student Employee of the Year award for the State of Indiana.

Degree Completion Office Open House
Indianapolis, IN (January 2015) – IUPUI’s newly established Degree Completion Office (DCO) will be hosting an open house on Wednesday, January 28, 2015, at their offices in the Walker Plaza building located at 719 Indiana Avenue, Indianapolis, Indiana. The Degree Completion Office was launched in July 2014 and is part of the Division of Undergraduate Education, also launched in July 2014, which is aligned with the IUPUI Strategic Plan.
IUPUI Class of 2018 Gives Ethnographic Performance
Indianapolis, IN (January 2015) – Students from the IUPUI class of 2018 relayed their experiences of being a first-year IUPUI student in an ethnographic performance titled, “Fantasy Forest or Jaguar Jungle.” The performance was offered for the first time this past December at the Black Box Theatre in Cavanaugh Hall on IUPUI’s campus as part of a fall University College Themed Learning Community (TLC) class, which, as part of the larger TLC program, has as its goal helping students understand and facilitate their transition into higher education academics and campus life.
Upward Bound Summer Academy Is in Full Swing
Indianapolis, IN (July 2014)—Seventy-seven high school students have been participating in the Upward Bound Summer Academy program at IUPUI during June and July. These students spent six weeks on the IUPUI campus, living in residential housing, taking academic classes, participating in community events and much more. They were provided academic skill instruction in math, science, and language arts to help them prepare for their high school classes in the fall. To end the Summer Academy program, next week qualified students will take a five-day trip to Atlanta, Georgia, where they will visit two Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), a state higher education institution, and several cultural venues.
Successful Bowen Scholars Program Comes to IUPUI
Bob and Terry Bowen, through the Bowen Family Foundation, are providing financial support for the IUPUI Bowen Scholars Program, a program model that originated at Ivy Tech Community College, effective with the fall 2014 semester. It is part of a broader expression of funding support from the Bowens, which has fostered incredible success in its students’ academic and life achievements, having provided more than six hundred students with various scholarships since 1993. The program will be housed in University College.
TRIO Upward Bound Celebrates 50th Anniversary
Indianapolis, IN (October 2014) – IUPUI will celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Upward Bound, one of eight federal TRIO programs, on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at Hine Hall Auditorium from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Melissa Lavitt, Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs will be the featured speaker. The celebration will begin with a time of networking, followed by a short program and anniversary celebration. Music will be provided by acoustic guitarist Joel Tucker.
Alison Bell appointed director of IUPUI degree completion office
INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis Associate Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Education Kathy E. Johnson has announced the appointment of Alison Bell as the director of IUPUI’s degree completion office, effective October 20. This is a new position created as part of IUPUI’s Division of Undergraduate Education and aligned with IUPUI strategic planning priorities related to supporting adult learners with some college credit but no degree in their goals for degree completion and career advancement.
2014 Indiana College Access and Success Network Summit about “Bridges” to College Success
Indianapolis, IN (September 2014) – The Indiana College Access and Success Network Summit (ICASN) will be hosted by IUPUI University College and the ICASN planning committee at the IUPUI Campus Center on Friday, September 19, 2014. The summit provides a platform to share research, analysis, and advocacy in improving postsecondary access, retention, and graduation. This conference, hosted alternately by IUPUI and Purdue each fall, is for faculty and staff professionals from secondary and postsecondary institutions as well as nonprofit organizations devoted to education.
Summer Bridge Program at IUPUI University College Reaches Record High Enrollment
Indianapolis, IN (August 2014) – IUPUI’s University College Summer Bridge Program is a unique two-week program that helps incoming freshmen and international students “bridge” the gap between high school and college. For two weeks before the fall semester begins, Summer Bridge students live on campus and attend specialized classes to help them learn about academic expectations, prepare for their initial academic year, and become accustomed to the IUPUI campus.
Barbara Browning Receives Advocate of the Dream Award
Indianapolis, IN (March 2014) – Barbra Browning, the director of Student Support Services at IUPUI for the past 16 years, has received the Advocate of the Dream award for her promotion of the ideals of freedom and equality present in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s historic “I Have A Dream” speech. Browning is being acknowledged for her support and persistence of these ideals in her day-to-day counseling and mentoring of and advocacy for the students she serves. This is the second time that Browning has received this award from the Black Student Union at IUPUI.
Khalilah Shabazz appointed director of IUPUI Multicultural Success Center

Math Assistance Center Serves Key Role in Success of Students Across Campus
Kevin Berkopes, new director of the IUPUI Math Assistance Center, gets it. Math is hard for many college students. Some people are “scared of math like they are scared of spiders,” he said. The key thing to remember is that math doesn’t have to be looked at as if it’s a deadly illness or something to fear, he said. New initiatives at the Math Assistance Center (MAC), which employs students who understand the anxiety connected to the subject, are intended to make math more accessible, enjoyable and achievable for the 1,000 students across the IUPUI campus who visit each week.
University College and Indiana Members Credit Union Announce Annual Scholarship Winners
Indianapolis, IN (July 2013) – Victoria Lane, 19, of Greenwood, and Katherine Francom, 22, of Indianapolis, were each selected as a recipient of a $1,000 scholarship from the Indiana Members Credit Union (IMCU) for the 2013-14 academic year. Lane and Francom’s selection was based on their exemplary display of the company’s philosophy of “people helping people” in their own communities.
IUPUI University College Hosts Upward Bound Summer Program Students
INDIANAPOLIS, IN (July 2013) — During the months of June and July, IUPUI’s University College is hosting eighty-two students participating in the Upward Bound summer program. Although the Upward Bound program at IUPUI is offered year-round to qualifying ninth and tenth grade students intending to enter postsecondary education after high school, the summer program consists of two main components: the Summer Academy and the Summer Pre-Professional Internship.

IUPUI University College Awarded Hermes Creative Awards
IUPUI University College has received three creative marketing awards from Hermes Creative Awards which are administered by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals (AMPC). The University College News Report was the recipient of a gold award, the highest award given, and the 2012 National Learning Communities Conference program received a platinum award, the second highest award given. The University College Inspire, Innovate, and Invigorate series received honorable mention.

Phyllis Gatewood Washington Receives 2013 Alvin S. Bynum Mentor Award for Staff

University College Advising Director Recipient of 2012 Glenn Irwin Award

IUPUI to Host 2012 National Learning Communities Conference
INDIANAPOLIS, IN (November 2012) Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) will host the 17th annual National Learning Communities Conference on November 8-10, 2012 at the University Place Conference Center and Hotel, located on IUPUI’s campus. Learning communities are generally defined as two or more linked courses which incorporate integrative learning and are offered in partnership with academic and student affairs.
The IUPUI Department of Mathematical Sciences and University College invite applications for the Director of Mathematics Assistance Center (MAC) to begin on or after January 1, 2013. A Ph.D. in Math or Math Education (or related discipline) is preferred. A master’s degree is required, also required is a demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching and management. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications.

IUPUI Employees Earn "Best Presenter" Award
Indianapolis, IN (August 2012) — Jenna Corcoran and Jennifer Weinmann, IUPUI employees in the University College Office of Student Employment, earned the Midwest Association of Student Employment Administrators (MASEA) “Best Presenter Award” for 2011-2012. MASEA is the student employment association for several regions that are all tied to the National Association of Student Employment Administrators (NSEA). Winners of this regional award are granted free travel to the national conference this October in Portland, Maine, and the opportunity to deliver the same presentation.

IUPUI University College Summer Bridge Program Expands

IUPUI University College Readiness Program Awarded $1.3 Million Grant
INDIANAPOLIS, IN (June 2012) – IUPUI University College’s Upward Bound program has been approved for five additional years of funding, having been awarded a $1.3 million grant from the United States Department of Education. This grant will be directed toward continuing to provide low-income and first-generation college students the tools for academic success and to help ensure that these students graduate from high school and are successful in college.

IUPUI Students Use Externships to Improve Job Outlook
INDIANAPOLIS - A recent study finds that young adults are the hardest hit in today's job market. One college program is giving its undergrads a shot at improving their chances upon graduation.
INDIANPOLIS, IN (November 2011) – The School of Science and the University College Special Programs for Academic Nurturing (SPAN) at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) will be working collaboratively with the national program, Project Lead the Way (PLTW), to offer Biomedical Sciences certification to high school teachers and special credit opportunities to high school students. For the past four years, the School of Science has hosted the PLTW Summer Training Institute. These training programs have certified over 300 high school teachers per year from 32 states to teach the PLTW curriculum in biomedical sciences. This new partnership between the School of Science and SPAN will expand this successful program, allowing academically qualified students who complete the biomedical coursework at their high school to earn college credit at IUPUI.

Linzi Moore Receives 2011 Chancellor’s Honorable Mention Award
Indianapolis, IN (May 2011) –IUPUI University College would like to acknowledge Linzi Moore as one of the 2011 IUPUI Chancellor’s Honorable Mention recipients. Moore is a sophomore pre-nursing major maintaining a 3.9 grade point average. Besides being a full-time student, Moore is also a volunteer at her local hospital in Rushville, IN, and a part-time worker within her community. When she heard that she was being considered as a recipient for the Chancellor’s Honorable Mention award, Moore felt a sense of fulfillment. “It’s good to know that all my hard work that I put in my studies is paying off.”
Joey Dobson Receives 2011 Chancellor’s Honorable Mention Award
Indianapolis, IN (May 2011) – IUPUI University College would like to acknowledge Joey Dobson as one of the 2011 IUPUI Chancellor’s Honorable Mention recipients. Dobson, from Batesville, Indiana, is an IUPUI sophomore studying Nursing and Psychology and carries a 4.0 grade point average. Dobson states that she was excited once she found out that she was being considered for the Chancellor’s Honorable Mention. “[It] feels good to be recognized for my hard work.” Dobson believes that her passion for nursing is the key motivator behind her academics and for personal reasons would like to use her nursing degree in the prenatal field.

University College Building Now Named Joseph T. Taylor Hall
The building housing IUPUI’s University College has been named for Joseph T. Taylor in honor of the man who served as dean of the Indianapolis Regional Campus from 1967 to 1970 (pre-IUPUI) and as the first dean of the newly established IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI (1970-1978).

IUPUI Council on Retention and Graduation and the Enrollment Management Council Hold Summit
The IUPUI Council on Retention and Graduation is hosting a joint summit with the IUPUI Enrollment Management Council to establish goals and directives. The summit will be held on Friday, October 8, 2010 from 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.at the Indianapolis Marion County Public Library in downtown Indianapolis. The two councils will develop priorities to help students persist in their studies as they move from the first year of college into the second year.

Angela Carlen, Coordinator of Experiential Learning for Academic and Career Development, University College, received three grant awards during the month of April: GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender) grant to purchase diversity-related materials for career library; PRAC (Program Review and Assessment Committee) grant to assess the IUPUI Externship Program; and CDPI (Career Development Professionals of Indiana) professional development award.
IUPUI University College 2009 Honors Ceremony

Beginning with the fall 2007 semester, University College will put a greater emphasis on the importance of integrating diversity and multicultural components into its learning community classes. As a first-year student, Millard found that making the adjustment to life in college was overwhelming as he no longer had the guidance he had received while in foster care. “My whole freshman year was just so terrible,” he says. “When I got here I was so used to having someone wake me up in the morning or tell me what I needed to do.” He failed all but one of his classes that year – a bitter disappointment in light of his 3.8 high school GPA.
