Janek Squibb, a nursing major, is one of the peer consultants for the Center for Service and Learning. After coming to IUPUI from Illinois, Squibb wanted to learn about the Indianapolis community.

“For me, service was a way to get involved with my community and learn about the social issues that are impacting people,” Squibb said. “I think you learn so much about your community, and it becomes a more meaningful experience when you can step outside of the world.”

Sara Alhaffar, a biology major, is also a peer consultant. Alhaffar has found volunteering and working as a peer consultant fulfilling, but wishes that more students knew how valuable it is to meet with a peer consultant.

If I knew that something like this existed in my first year or second year, I definitely would’ve taken advantage of it. I think people just have to know it exists to utilize it.

About the Center for Service and Learning

The Center for Service and Learning brings together the citizens of Indianapolis and the students, faculty, and staff at IUPUI to improve people’s lives through volunteering. The center offers programs and resources to connect people with volunteer and scholarship opportunities.

Students and student organizations can receive detailed information on volunteer opportunities throughout the year by emailing or meeting with a peer consultant. Students will discuss their interests, availability, and volunteer goals to ensure they get matched with the perfect organization for them. Request a consultation via the Center for Service and Learning website.
