Indianapolis, IN (April 2011) – On Sunday, March 27, IUPUI University College awarded IUPUI sophomore, Laura Hedlund the 2011 Chancellor’s Scholar Award during the Honor’s Ceremony. The ceremony was held at the Scottish Rite Cathedral.
The Chancellor’s Scholar Award is an award that is given out to one student from each IUPUI school every year. A committee of University College faculty and staff review potential candidates’ GPA, extracurricular activities such as Honor Societies, Undergraduate Student Government, Mentoring, and others.Winning this award is an amazing honor and it will open up a lot of doors for me in the future,” Hedlund said.
Hedlund, 19, is a nursing major who has been a part of University College since her senior year of high school, as a SPAN student. She has a sincere appreciation for the professors at IUPUI as well as the opportunities at IUPUI for research, honor’s work, and volunteering.Opportunities that Hedlund has taken advantage of include being involved in Honor’s College, Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, Golden Key International Honor Society, undergraduate student government as a senator for Alpha Lambda Delta and the IUPUI Chamber Ensemble. She is also a mentor for human biology. Hedlund has also worked as a cognitive skills trainer and recently accepted a job at Riley Children’s Hospital.
I think that excelling in education is important because it lays the foundation for the rest of your life and your future career,” Hedlund said. “My advice [to other students] is to study hard and work to always do your best but to make sure to still have fun.
Hedlund hopes to one day work as a nurse in either an Intensive Care Unit or the ER and then work with Lifeline. Other goals include working as traveling nurse, getting her masters and being a nurse practitioner.
