Students at Center of 12th Annual National Learning Communities Conference

Indianapolis, IN (October 2007) – Indianapolis University-Purdue University Indianapolis is hosting the 12th Annual National Learning Communities Conference from November 7-9, 2007 at the University Place Conference Center and Hotel. The theme is “Students at the Center.” At this yearly conference, administrators, students, librarians, and academic advisors of higher education who are involved in learning communities come together to discuss ideas, techniques, and the most beneficial approaches to shape a student’s collegiate experience. This year’s theme “will allow us to focus on the important role students play as active contributors to the learning process,” says Frank Ross, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Life and Learning.

Over 70 seminar sessions will take place with presenters coming from all over the United States. The keynote speakers are Nancy Shapiro, Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, University System of Maryland and Mary Stuart Hunter, Assistant Vice Provost and Executive Director, National Resource Center for the First-Year Experience and Students in Transition at University of South Carolina.

The activities will include city and campus tours, a Chat Room, and an evening reception highlighting student talent. A piano student from the IU School of Music at IUPUI will play during the reception. Artwork by students from IU Herron School of Art and Design at IUPUI will be on display, and the IUPUI Theatre Company will perform an original play directed by Regina Turner, IUPUI Associate Professor of Communication Studies and Academic Specialist for University College. The acclaimed Hoosier Bag will be given as a keepsake, packed with products totally or partially made in Indiana. The pre-conference sessions and tours on Wednesday, November 7 are free to all registered attendees.
