Bridge program increases student excitement for college life.

In late August, incoming IUPUI freshman arrived on campus eager to participate in unique experiences designed to ease their transition to college through the Bridge program.  

Bridge leaders clad in neon shirts guided more than 1000 students between educational and recreational activities, helping them get acquainted with the variety of services and programs that the IUPUI community has to offer. This week-long sneak peek into life on campus is one important reason why so many freshman participate in the program each year. Bridge students arrive ahead of fall semester crowds because they want early access to campus, and to get a head start familiarizing themselves with a place that they will most likely call home for the next four years.

Christian Brock, an incoming freshman majoring in business and a member of the Diversity Enrichment and Achievement Program said that he chose to participate in Bridge to get a “jump start” on his time in college. “I didn’t want to just jump in the first day, not knowing where everything was at. I wanted to get involved on campus.”

The campus-wide scavenger hunt provided a fun way to help students learn to navigate the university, while off-campus trips, including a visit to the Indiana State Museum, introduced them to the main features of the Indianapolis downtown. These activities, combined with sessions that focused on achieving success in class and exposure to the greater community, furthered Brock’s excitement to begin his first semester at IUPUI.

A sense of community can be essential for a successful college experience; students require a strong network to support and assist them through any challenges they may face. Prior to the first day of class, Bridge helps aid in the creation of those communities students’ often rely on to thrive. 

“I feel like every freshman should do Bridge because it really helps you get involved in the campus early, and you meet a lot of new friends before school actually starts.”

Alyssa White, a freshman planning to major in exercise science, heard about Bridge from her roommate and was inspired to sign up at orientation. When she joined the program, she was pleasantly surprised by how quickly everyone got along. “Everyone just kind of loves each other already. I was nervous before coming to campus. Making friends was one of my biggest priorities because I wanted to get along with everyone. And so far, I'm doing that.” White feels that by making connections even before the semester begins she is setting herself up for success. “Right now, we’re just learning how to be a community.”

Brock, White, and Love all agree that Bridge positively impacted their college experience. Early adaptation to campus life can make it easier for students to confidently overcome challenges and get involved in campus life.  The instructors and leaders who form the backbone of Bridge create a welcoming and educational space for students, helping them form long lasting connections.

Bridge (formerly Summer Bridge), is one of the experiences offered as a part of the First-Year Experience programs at IUPUI. It is a week-long program that teaches students the ins and outs of campus and to help them feel prepared for their first year of college. Students work closely with faculty and staff to understand the expectations for their programs and participate in community building activities.
