Indianapolis, IN (February 2013) — IUPUI University College is having its inaugural First-Year Seminar (FYS) Idea Exchange on Friday, February 15, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., in Taylor Hall, UC104. Sponsored by the First-Year Seminar-Faculty Learning Community and University College, the Idea Exchange will collect the ideas from the event and make them available to all FYS faculty campus-wide at IUPUI.
The keynote speaker is Brad Garner, Director of Faculty Enrichment in the Center for Learning and Innovation at Indiana Wesleyan University. He has been actively involved for several years in directing and teaching the first-year seminar on his campus. He is also a frequent presenter at conferences and workshops and has authored and coauthored several publications, including A Brief Guide to Teaching Adult Learners (2009) and A Brief Guide to Millennial Learners (2007).
One of the goals for the event is to provide faculty with solid professional development. Speaking to this, David Sabol, faculty member for English in the School of Liberal Arts and University College stated, “The Idea Exchange is a professional development opportunity for FYS faculty to meet others teaching the course on campus and to share teaching and curriculum ideas. Participants can use the information gained at the event immediately to plan, prepare, and/or revise their FYS courses to improve their effectiveness with entering students.”
