New spaces for key IUPUI offices and programs bring many benefits to students, faculty, and staff

By:

The summer months are often a time for reflection and planning for many campus departments. While the IUPUI campus never stops moving, a decrease in foot traffic and requests for help creates the perfect time to make changes to programming and services to better support students, faculty, and staff during the busy fall and spring semesters. This summer, multiple offices and programs in the IUPUI Division of Undergraduate Education have permanently relocated their spaces to increase collaboration, provide streamlined access, and create learning spaces that are more conducive to the support they provide to the campus. Check out the areas below to ensure you know where to find them and can refer students to the correct location when needed.

The Health and Life Sciences Advising Center

New Location: Taylor Hall, Third Floor

The Health and Life Sciences Advising Center has moved to the third floor of Taylor Hall - also home to University College Academic and Career Development. University College students, regardless of their intended major, can visit one convenient location for all of their career planning and academic advising needs. Martha Marshall, student success advisor in the Health and Life Sciences Advising Center, said, "Our move brings all the University College advising clusters into the same location. It will allow for us to share ideas, confer on students, and ask questions directly to our peers advising students in other disciplines."

The Office of Student Employment

New Location: University Tower, Suite 202

(IUPUI part-time job supervisors)

(off-campus part-time job supervisors)

The Office of Student Employment has moved to University Tower (the Tower) in suite 202 on the second floor, just above the main lobby. Their new location provides easier access and seamless part-time job hunting for students. Janna McDonald, the director of the Office of Student Employment, shared her excitement about the move: “Being easily accessible to both students and employers is an important factor in our location placement. Students can easily find us in the Tower near the Den by Denny's. They can stop in for a Grand Slam and schedule time to see us for our many services.”

Though moving entire offices has its challenges, it has been worth all the hard work and effort. “It gave our office a chance to purge old and unneeded items and think through new space set up that would be conducive to students, visitors, and staff,” reflected McDonald.

The Office of Student Employment will hold an open house during the fall semester to showcase their new space to students, faculty, and staff. Make sure to stop by to check out their new digs and to learn about all of the great resources and services they provide to the campus as a whole.

The Institute for Engaged Learning

New Location: Hine Hall, Suite 243

The Institute for Engaged Learning is a new collaboration at IUPUI devoted to promoting and supporting equitable access to curricular and co-curricular engaged learning opportunities for all students. The new institute has been located on the second floor of Hine Hall in suite 243 and is comprised of units and centers that work together to support faculty, staff, and students, including:

  • Center for Research and Learning
  • Center for Service and Learning
  • ePortfolio Initiative
  • First-Year Experience programs (Bridge, Learning Communities, and First-Year Seminars)
  • Gateway Learning Academy
  • RISE

“The open layout of the new office will enable us to have enhanced faculty interactions and networking with programs and schools across campus,” said Dominique Galli, director of the Center for Research and Learning. She also hopes that their new collaborative space will provide a more centralized space for students who are looking for engaged learning opportunities that will complement their area of study.
