Indianapolis, IN (March 2017) – Terrel Brown, academic advisor in IUPUI’s Division of Undergraduate Education, was named the staff/professional Jaguar Academic Advising Association (JACADA) Advisor of the Year for his outstanding work with the division’s offices of Academic and Career Development and 21st Century Scholars. Brown has been an advisor with the division for two years. His award was announced and presented at the JACADA Annual Meeting during Advisor Appreciation Week, which was March 6–10, 2017.
“Receiving the JACADA Advisor of the Year Award is an absolute honor, and I truly appreciate the recognition of this award,” Brown said. “I wouldn’t be able to help our students in such a way if it were not for all of the support and [shared] knowledge of my fellow colleagues. This award is not just an individual award, but to me, it is a team award. I’m truly blessed to work with the students here at IUPUI, and I will continue my work to make sure each student’s academic experience is the best.”
President of JACADA, Amy C. Maidi, stated, “Terrel will be one of four advisors representing IUPUI in the Global Awards Program for outstanding advising through the international competition held by the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA).
The purpose of JACADA is to promote the quality of academic advising at IUPUI. The purpose of the Advisor of the Year Award is to honor academic advisors who demonstrate a deep commitment to providing an exemplary educational experience for IUPUI students. There are three categories of advising awards given each year: staff/professional advisors, faculty advisors, and advising administrators.
JACADA is the professional advising organization for IUPUI. The various committees of the organization—professional development, campus affairs, membership, communications, research and assessment, and policy and procedures—provide an opportunity for campus advisors to get involved and to promote a professional advising community. As such, JACADA has a seat on the Campus Advising Council, Directors of Advising, and the AdRx Technical Committee at IUPUI. In 2010, JACADA was recognized by the IUPUI University College Foundations of Excellence Action Plan Status Report as “a positive outcome of the work accomplished in supporting professional development and engaging advisors to share information for student success at IUPUI since 2007.”
JACADA is open to IUPUI faculty members, administrators, counselors, academic advisors, career advisors, graduate students, and other members of the community whose interest is in the area of academic advising and student success. Membership is free.
